Athens: Birth of Democracy

2,500 years ago, a radical political experiment in Athens changed history: For the first time, power did not belong to kings or aristocrats, but to the citizens themselves. Following archaeologists and historians from the ruins of the Agora to modern excavations and making use of experimental archaeology, the film sheds light on the birth of the first democracy and its enduring significance.

The screening will be followed by a roundtable discussion on the topic “Lessons in Democracy,” moderated by the president of the Academy of Athens, Nikiforos Diamantouros, with the participation of Academic Konstantinos Bourazelis and the Director of the French School of Athens, Véronique Chankowski.
